#297

Hi there, Alex here. Like all good friendships, this one started over lunch. Like so many of us, my relationship with Daniel started through FoodTech Weekly. I initially came for the funding announcements and stayed for the quirky jokes about compostable toilets that upcycle beet waste.

Daniel & Alex, Alex & Daniel

I am excited for Daniel’s next steps, knowing that it will have a global impact on our industry. My promise to Daniel is to take the newsletter that he has built over the last 6 years to the next stage. Over the next couple of months, you will see FTW evolve from a newsletter to a global community that supports agrifood founders to build, scale, and sell their business.

To align with this mission, we had a website rebrand at FoodTech Weekly. Check out the new site www.foodtechweekly.com

This week's rundown:

💰 MOSH bags $13M for creatine-enriched protein bars with ‘brain blend’ of functional ingredients
💰 SuperMeat scores $6M to bring cultivated chicken to market
🙉 Why are some Gibraltar monkeys eating mud?

Today’s newsletter was sent to {{active_subscriber_count}} subscribers. Welcome to FoodTech Weekly.

CONVERSATIONS

Nate Petre of Chainreactor

From kitchens to space labs, Nate Petre went from cooking food to “baking” bioreactors as CEO of Chainreactor. With a PhD in machines, reef-building in Jamaica, and even a NASA project on seaweed surfboards, he’s now reinventing how biology is made. Chainreactor’s mission: replace pharma-style mega bioreactors with modular, affordable systems that scale like cloud servers. Their 3D-printed, sensor-rich vessels let startups grow meat, wood, or materials without million-dollar upfront costs. The goal? Democratize biomanufacturing, slash emissions, and turn biology into infrastructure anyone can access. To learn more, I sat down with Nate, offered some flavored toothpicks, and started to geek out. Full conversation here!

Court Battle and Big Money Contracts

Not Milk will also be Not Milk in the future

🧨 Onego Bio vs The Every Company continues: Last week, we wrote about the latest developments in the court battle between the two novel food companies. This week, Green Queen shared the news that Every has now asked the court to sanction Onego over "duplicative” IP lawsuits. Every CEO shared the news with a comment that he expects the fight to continue for 1-2 more years. He also said, “We live in a society where it’s far too easy to take someone to court.” Well, things might just about to get a lot worse: the Jevons paradox predicts that when AI lowers the costs of legal work, it might unlock a “tsunami of legal BS”, as described by Eric Ries.

🥩 Adamo Foods has been awarded €10M project Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). Through the new 3-year project called MycoStruct, they are teaming up with 11 partners to bring their mycelium steaks to plates across Europe.

🥛NotCo can continue using the trademark ‘NotMilk’ on its plant-based milk. However, they can’t use ‘milk’ and related imagery anywhere else on their packaging.

🐩 Bond Pet Foods has obtained a ‘no questions’ letter from the FDA, allowing it to sell the precision-fermented lamb protein for use in dog food.

💸 One billion-dollar fund aimed at AgriFood & Climate Ecosystem investments. S2G Investments is specifically targeting the “Missing Middle”, the financing gap between early-stage venture and infrastructure-scale capital for companies ready for market expansion.

⚖️ Scale won’t fix broken unit economics. Christie Lagally, the founder and CEO of Rebellyous Foods, shared her thoughts on the scaling of alt-meat manufacturing on AgFunderNewsletter.

🪖 Biosphere has been awarded $9 million U.S. Army contract to develop an on-demand nutrition production system for soldiers.

RANDOM STUFF

Why Gibraltar Monkeys Eat Mud

🐒 Some monkeys living on the Rock of Gibraltar have learned to eat soil, in what scientists believe is an effort to rebalance their gut microbiomes after all the junk food they steal, or receive, from tourists.

🍲 Perpetual stew is a dish that is kept constantly cooking — sometimes for years — simmering over heat nonstop with new ingredients and liquid added to it as needed. Is it safe to eat?

☢️ Tuber-based sensors (think potatoes) can effectively detect gamma radiation and be planted in fields surrounding nuclear power plants.

We love you.
