The Protein Brewery’s mycoprotein, Fermotein, was the first fungal biomass to go through the EU novel food system, earning a positive EFSA opinion in December 2025 and EU authorisation in June 2026. Days later, it closed an €18M Series B extension led by ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund, with Invest-NL, Novo Holdings, Madeli and BOM, bringing total funding past €70M.

RANDOM STUFF

Whale curry, sheepskin cheese, and recipes set in stone

🐳 Whale meat curry was once a UK dinner suggestion. A University of Exeter study of 1,000+ Good Housekeeping seafood recipes dating back to 1923 found more than 67 species featured. Since the 1970s? Just five - cod, haddock, tuna, salmon and prawns, have accounted for over 60% of mentions!

🧀 A former Seattle cheesemaker is hiking the world for rare cheeses. Trevor Warmedahl has documented traditional cheesemaking in 20+ countries, from yak-milk curds in Mongolia to traditional aged sheep's milk cheese in Georgia.

🪦 Recipes carved on gravestones are now a cookbook. Rosie Grant’s To Die For collects 40 headstone recipes, from spritz cookies to kasha varnishkes, each approved by the families of the cooks.

With love,
